LITERACY TEAM
Temple Beth Emunah is looking for
volunteers to join their Literacy
Team. Volunteers of the Literacy Team
go into local Brockton Elementary
Schools and work with students in
their reading and writing skills.
Our team leader is Robin Ekpunobi.
She has been working with the JCRC
and members of Temple Beth Emunah
to fill the need in our local schools.
The commitment is just for one hour
a week.
All volunteers are trained in how
to service these special students.
Training dates coming up in January.

ORGAN DONATION - THE ULTIMATE
MITZVAH
Would you accept a transplanted organ
if it were your only chance of survival?
Most of us would not hesitate to answer
with a resounding yes. Would you allow
your organs or those of a loved one
to be donated if, God forbid, the
occasion arose? According to Jewish
law, you should also not hesitate
to answer yes.
The mitzvah of pikuah nefesh, of
saving a life, overrides all other
laws. As the rabbis state, to save
one life is to save the world. According
to Rabbi Elliot Dorff, Rector of the
University of Judaism, "The overriding
principles of honoring the dead (k'vod
hamet) and saving lives (pikuah nefesh)
work in tandem. That is, saving a
person's life is so sacred a value
in Judaism that if a person's organ
can be used to save someone else's
life, it is actually an honor to the
deceased." The Rabbinical Assembly
Committee on Jewish Law and Standards
has ruled that one is obligated to
permit postmortem transplantation
of his or her organs in lifesaving
medical procedures. The body of an
organ and/or tissue donor is always
treated with care and respect, and
donation does not delay burial.
November 13-14, in the Thanksgiving
season, has been designated nationally
as Donor Sabbath. Take this opportunity
to learn about and talk about the
idea of organ donation. Fill out the
donor card below. Discuss this mitzvah
with your family so your loved ones
are sure of your intent. Your action
has the potential to save lives.

medical personnel that I
am a donor. In so doing,

partner and agent in the
mitzvah of piknah nefesh,
saving lives.
In keeping with the Jewish
belief that the human body
is God's creation, and is
thus to be accorded sanctity
even after death, please
see that all appropriate
steps are taken on my behalf
to maintain kvod ha-met
(honor to the deceased).
As soon as needed organs
or tissues are retrieved
in accordance with my instructions,
see that the rest of my
remains are buried in a
Jewish cemetery, in accordance
with Jewish law and custom.

CONTRIBUTIONS
Building Maintenance Fund – All new
members are required to pledge $500
to the Building Maintenance Fund.
This amount is payable over five (5)
years. At the conclusion of payment,
you will receive information about
placing a plaque on the rotunda wall,
next to the Burning Bush.
A note to seasoned members – Please
consider donating an additional plaque
in honor of a loved one, in memory
of a loved one, or for yourself, for
a pledge of $500.
Sanctuary Seats – A Sanctuary Seat
may be donated for a pledge of $1000,
payable over four (4) years. Consider
honoring a loved one on a special
occasion. In addition to placing a
plaque on the seat, one will also
be placed on the wall in the rotunda.
Chapel Seats – A Chapel Seat may
be donated for a pledge of $750, payable
over three (3) years. In addition
to placing a plaque on the seat, one
will also be placed on the wall in
the rotunda. Chapel Seats are limited
so orders will be taken on a first
come first serve basis.
We are cognizant
of the fact that the economy is not
in great shape. Money is tight all
over and the Temple is one more bill
that can overwhelm a tight budget.
The Temple also has a budget to maintain.
The above fund-raising options will
go a long way in helping relieve this
heavy financial burden on the Temple.
